Tips to Help Prevent Pet Loss
-
Keep identification up to date: Ensure your pet wears a collar with a current ID tag. Include your phone number and address. Microchipping your pet provides an additional layer of protection.
-
Secure your property: Regularly check that gates, fences, and doors are secure. Repair any damage promptly to prevent escape.
-
Use a leash: Always walk dogs on a leash, even if they’re well-trained. Unexpected distractions can cause pets to bolt.
-
Supervise outdoor time: Don’t leave pets unsupervised in unfenced yards or outside for extended periods.
-
Spay or neuter your pet: Pets that are spayed or neutered are less likely to roam.
-
Train recall commands: Teach your pet to reliably return when called.
-
Monitor storm and fireworks behavior: Many pets run away during storms or fireworks. Keep them indoors and calm during these times.
If your pet does go missing, report it immediately to local authorities and shelters, and consider posting on community social media groups or local lost pet websites.
