Open Space

Open Space is a broad term for undeveloped land that plays a critically important role in resource preservation. The South Whitehall Landscapes Plan aimed to help define what Open Space means in South Whitehall, by classifying it by distinct characteristics important to the community.

Open Space in South Whitehall Township is broken down into two (2) distinct types:

  • Conservation Open Space: Open space areas primarily intended for environmental, agricultural, or viewshed protection. These areas are sometimes open to the public, but for the most part access is limited. Conservation Open Spaces include Wild Areas, Managed Natural Areas, Large Farms, and Farmettes.
  • Civic Open Space: Open space areas typically located near development that are intended to benefit the nearby development. These areas are often open to the public to support a variety of recreational and social needs. Civic Open Spaces include Market Farms, Passive Parks, Active Parks, Pocket Parks (Plazas), and Utility Areas.
